Introduction to Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy 

What is TF-CBT?

TF-CBT is a psychosocial treatment model designed to treat post-traumatic stress and related emotional and behavioral problems in children. Initially developed to address the psychological trauma associated with child sexual abuse, the model has been adapted for use with children who have a wide array of traumatic experiences, including domestic violence, traumatic loss, and the often multiple psychological traumas experienced by children prior to foster care placement. Introduction to TF-CBT Virtual Training

As sponsored by the Ohio Childrens Alliance:   This virtual training will take place on Weds. June 7th from 1-4 PM ET; Thurs. June 8th from 8:30 AM-12:30 PM and Fri. June 9th from 8:30 AM-12:30 PM.  The cost is $325 for the workshop.

Registration for 3-half/day virtual training includes all course materials and 11 Continuing Education Credits*. Participants of this training are required to have a Master’s level degree, or be actively enrolled in a Master’s level program. Registration fee does not include TF-CBT consultation call requirement. Consultation calls are not part of the intro training course. Further information is provided during the training.* *

Pre-Training Requirements:

Participants of this training are required to have a Master’s level degree or be currently enrolled in a Master’s level program.  All course attendees are required to complete the online TF-CBT web-based learning course (for a small fee, separate from this training) prior to the in-person or virtual training.  Go to this website and click “register”Attendees will be required to bring proof of completion of the online training to the in-person or virtual training, for the trainer’s verification.

**Questions about Consultation Calls (which will be provided at an additional fee) and full Certification options and requirements will be provided during the training days, for registered participants.

Introduction to TF-CBT Training Objectives
  • Identify ways that traumatic experiences have the potential to impact child development and health throughout the lifespan.
  • Cite at least two key research studies that demonstrate the potential impacts of childhood trauma on the lifespan.
  • Explain why trauma-informed care is so vital, and distinguish between traditional mental health treatment and trauma-informed care.
  • Describe the nature of the research that supports the efficacy of TF-CBT.
  • Identify and define each component of the TF-CBT model.
  • Recognize the importance of respectful and empowering client engagement in the treatment process.
  • Understand the rationale behind each TF-CBT component and be able to use at least 3 tools or strategies for each of the model’s components.
  • Access and practice trauma focused assessment tools.

About the Trainer: Kristine Buffington, MSW, LISW-S

Kristine is a certified TF-CBT trainer, with more than 20 years of experience. Kristine is considered an expert in trauma informed care and trains providers, courts, agencies, and therapists nationwide in TF-CBT under the direction of Judith Cohen, MD and Anthony Mannarino, Ph.D., the developers of this treatment model. Kristine served as Chair of the Ohio Department of Mental Health Child Trauma Task Force Training and Evidence Based Practices Committee. She is a former member and past chair of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) Juvenile Delinquency Committee.
